Hitting Lesson 1: Setup, Load, Contact Out Front
Free preview
Level: Foundation (HS and up) · Time: about 60 minutes · Need: bat, tee, 20–30 balls, a net or cage, a phone to film
Goal: Build an athletic setup and a back-hip load that gets you on time, so you hit the ball out in front with your head still.
Why it matters: Most weak contact comes from a late or arm-only move: no real load, a drifting head, or a contact point too deep. Fix the load and the contact point first and every later lesson (bat path, power, timing against velocity) builds on it.

2. Do this: drills, sets and reps
| Drill | How | Sets × reps | Cue |
|---|---|---|---|
| A. Taps drill | Set up slightly wider than normal. Load the back hip 3 times (pull the front foot in with the back hip, no leaning), then swing at a middle tee. | 3 × 5 swings | “Load in the hip, not outside the knee.” |
| B. Step-backs | Start with feet together off the tee. Step the back foot back into the hip, then stride and swing in one rhythm. | 3 × 6 swings | “Back, then forward. Don’t stall.” |
| C. Contact-point tee ladder | Three tee spots: deep (middle of plate), middle (front of plate), out front (front foot). Hit 5 at each spot, then repeat. | 3 rounds × 15 (45 swings) | “Line drive to the right part of the field for each spot.” |
| D. Freeze-frame check | Normal swing at the middle tee. Freeze at contact. Film 5 from the side. | 2 × 5 | “Head still, barrel past the front hip, back heel up.” |
3. Common mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | What you see | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Loading outside the back knee | Weight drifts past the back foot and the head moves back | Taps drill. Feel the pinch in the back hip crease and keep the knee inside the foot. |
| No load, arm-only swing | Weak flies to the opposite field, barrel drags | Step-backs. Exaggerate the step back for 2 sets, then shrink it. |
| Contact too deep | Jammed, foul balls the other way on middle pitches | Move the tee to the front-foot spot and line-drive it up the middle. |
| Head pulls off | Head turns toward the pull side before contact | Freeze-frame reps. Keep your eyes on the tee for one count after contact. |
| Lunging (stride with the body) | Head moves forward with the stride | Stride with the leg only. Head stays in the middle of your feet until the swing starts. |
4. How to measure progress
- Line-drive score: 20 swings off the middle tee. Count hard line drives into a target zone (net square or middle-of-field). Write it down. Goal: 14 of 20.
- Freeze-frame score: 5 filmed freezes. Score 1 point for each checkpoint hit (head still, barrel out front, back heel up). Goal: 13 of 15.
- Exit velo (if you have a radar): Best of 5 and average of 10 off the tee (see the radar video for setup). Retest every 2 weeks. Contact quality should rise before max speed does.
- Move on to Lesson 2 when: you hit both goals in two sessions in a row.
5. At-home version (no cage, no field)
- 15 Taps-drill dry swings in front of a mirror or window reflection. Watch that the head stays still.
- 15 step-back dry swings. Rolled towel or bat, slow, then full speed.
- 20 swings into a hitting net or old blanket with wiffle or sock balls. Tee or a chair back for height. Do the contact-point ladder with 3 spots.
- Film 3 freezes on your phone and score them.
Challenge: Beat your line-drive score next session. If your head moves on the film, do 10 more freeze-frame reps before you leave.
