Hitting Lesson 2: Bat Path and Barrel Accuracy
Free preview
Level: Foundation (HS and up) · Time: about 60 minutes · Need: bat, tee, 20–30 balls, a net or cage, a phone to film
Goal: Get the barrel on plane with the pitch and square the ball up more often.
Why it matters: Hard contact comes from matching the bat path to the pitch. A bat that cuts down or loops up only meets the ball for an instant. A path that stays on plane gives you more room for error and more line drives.

2. Do this: drills, sets and reps
| Drill | How | Sets × reps | Cue |
|---|---|---|---|
| A. High tee | Tee at the top of your zone (belly button height). Land tall and work a flatter path. Line drives gap to gap. | 3 × 6 swings | “Stay tall, stay flat.” |
| B. Low tee | Tee at the knees. Bend at the hips (side bend) and lift the low pitch into a line drive. | 3 × 6 swings | “Tilt, don’t drop.” |
| C. High, middle, low | Change tee height every swing (or have a tosser mix heights). Same target: hard line drive. | 3 × 9 swings | “Match the plane to the pitch.” |
| D. Line-drive target game | Hang a target or pick a spot in the net about 15–20° up. Score 2 for a hit, 1 for a near miss. | 2 × 10 swings | “Flush, not hooked or sliced.” |
3. Common mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | What you see | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Chopping down | Ground balls and topped balls on high pitches | High tee. Stay tall and keep the barrel above the hands. |
| Dropping the back shoulder | Pop-ups on low pitches, back shoulder sinks | Low tee with side bend, not a collapse. |
| Hooking or slicing | Ball curves foul with lots of side spin | Hit the inside-back of the ball and stay through it. |
| Casting the barrel | Barrel gets long early; weak opposite-field contact | Short tee rounds with the knob working toward the ball first. |
4. How to measure progress
- Line-drive score: 20 swings mixed heights. Count hard line drives. Goal: 13 of 20.
- Target game: Points out of 20 possible. Track the number every session.
- Exit velo (if you have a radar): Average of 10 at each height. The low and high numbers should get closer to the middle.
- Move on to Lesson 3 when: you score 13 of 20 line drives in two sessions in a row.
5. At-home version (no cage, no field)
- 15 slow-motion dry swings at three heights in front of a mirror.
- 20 wiffle or sock balls off a tee or chair into a net at high, middle and low.
- Film 3 swings at each height and compare the shoulder tilt.
Challenge: Beat your line-drive score. If the high pitch keeps going into the ground, do 10 more high tee swings.
