Base running Lesson 1: First Step, Run Through First, Round the Bag
Free preview
Level: Foundation (HS and up) · Time: about 35–50 minutes · Need: running shoes, a base or marker, cones, a stopwatch or phone
Goal: Get out of the box fast, run hard through first base and make an efficient turn on base hits.
Why it matters: Home-to-first time is one of the first numbers college coaches look at, and a fast turn turns singles into doubles. Most players lose time with a slow first step, a lunge at the bag or a wide, flat turn.

2. Do this: drills, sets and reps
| Drill | How | Sets × reps | Cue |
|---|---|---|---|
| A. Box starts | From your batting stance, finish a dry swing and take your first two steps toward first. Back foot crosses (righty) or front foot drives (lefty). | 3 × 6 starts | “Finish the swing, then explode.” |
| B. Through-the-bag sprints | Sprint through first base. Hit the front of the bag, run 10–15 feet past, break down and look right for an overthrow. | 2 × 6 sprints | “Run through it, not to it.” |
| C. Banana turns | On a base hit, start the curve 15–20 feet before first, touch the inside corner and look for the ball. | 3 × 5 turns | “Curve early, hit the inside corner.” |
| D. Home-to-first timing | Partner times from contact (or swing finish) to the foot hitting first base. | 1 × 5 timed runs | “Every run is timed.” |
3. Common mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | What you see | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Watching the ball out of the box | Slow first two steps | Box starts. Eyes to first base after contact. |
| Lunging or jumping at the bag | Slower times and risk of injury | Run through the front of the bag. |
| Wide, flat turn | Big loop into right field | Start the curve early and lean in. |
| Slowing down early | Jogging the last few steps | Sprint through until past the bag. |
4. How to measure progress
- Home-to-first: Best and average of 5. Track it every two weeks.
- Turn check: Film 3 turns from behind. Do you touch the inside corner and stay close to the bag? Goal: 3 of 3.
- Box start: Time the first 10 feet out of the box on video. Lower it.
- Move on to Lesson 2 when: your average home-to-first time has improved and every turn is clean.
5. At-home version
- Hallway or driveway: 8 first-step starts from a stance.
- Sidewalk or yard: 6 banana turns around a backpack “base”.
- Film one sprint and check your arm action.
Challenge: Time one “through the bag” sprint today. Beat it by the end of the week.
