Parents Lesson 1: How Recruiting Actually Works
Free preview
Stage: Start early (Grades 9–10) · Time: about 60 minutes · Need: a calendar, your son’s grade and graduation year, 15 minutes together
Goal: Understand how college baseball recruiting really happens, who starts the contact, and the dates when coaches are allowed to reach out.
Why it matters: Most families either start late or panic early. Knowing the real rules and the normal timeline lets you plan calmly, avoid wasted money, and help your son make good choices at the right time.

2. What you need to know
| Topic | The short version | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Who starts it | Your son can email any coach at any age. The rules limit what coaches can send back, not what he sends. | NCSA: when coaches can contact you |
| D-I coaches | Calls, texts, emails and DMs: from Aug. 1 before junior year. In-person contact off campus, official visits and recruiting talk at a college’s camp: from Sept. 1 of junior year. | NCAA D-I Proposal 2019-108 (baseball recruiting model, adopted) |
| D-I calendar | Coaches recruit in contact, quiet and dead periods, plus total shutdowns (for example Nov. 24–29 and Dec. 22–27, 2026). Avoid planning visits in dead periods. | NCAA 2026–27 D-I baseball recruiting calendar |
| D-II, D-III, NAIA, JUCO | D-II: calls, texts and emails at any time; in-person contact and official visits from June 15 before junior year. D-III, NAIA and junior colleges have far fewer timing limits. | NCSA: when coaches can contact you |
| Signing | The first day to sign a written D-I or D-II offer (an athletics aid agreement) in baseball is Nov. 12, 2026 for this year’s seniors. | NCAA 2026–27 signing dates |
3. Common mistakes and fixes
| Mistake | What you see | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Waiting for coaches to call | Junior year arrives and no one has heard of him | He builds a list and emails coaches from 9th–10th grade, with video and grades. |
| Panicking about early commits | You see social posts of 9th graders “committing” | Most players are recruited later and at many levels. Follow your own plan. |
| Using another sport’s dates | You expect D-I calls on June 15 | Baseball D-I dates are Aug. 1 and Sept. 1 of junior year. Check the NCAA calendar. |
| Only looking at D-I | Every school on the list is a big-name program | Add D-II, D-III, NAIA and junior colleges that fit (Lesson 3). |
4. How to know you are on track
- By end of 10th grade: a written list of 20–30 schools at more than one level, and an NCAA Eligibility Center Profile Page.
- By Aug. 1 before 11th grade: a current skills video and a short intro email ready to send.
- Each season: a log of every email, camp and reply (date, coach, school, next step).
- You are on track when: your son can explain the contact dates for D-I, D-II and D-III in his own words.
5. Do this at home this week
- Sit down for 15 minutes. Write your son’s graduation year and the key dates for his class on the family calendar.
- Ask him: “What level and what kind of school do you want?” Listen first.
- Start a simple shared spreadsheet: school, level, coach, email, last contact, next step.
Challenge: Have your son tell you, in two minutes, how recruiting works and when coaches can contact him. Fill any gaps together using this page.
Check the latest: Rules change. Check the NCAA site for the latest: [ncaa.org/eligibility-center](https://www.ncaa.org/eligibility-center/). Numbers marked “estimate” are the Hub’s guidance, not rules.
